One of the most ridiculous food events in Texas is the drive to Austin next week. Sandoitchi, a Japanese-inspired sandwich pop-up, announced via Instagram that it will be in the capital for the first time from January 10-23.
Sandoitchis sandwiches – Sandos for connoisseurs – are served on milk bread, beautifully sliced and then perfectly packed in custom-made branded boxes. The menu itself is limited and includes egg salad, hot Nashville-style chicken, pork katsu, and the occasional Japanese wagyu options. For dessert, fans can grab strawberries and matcha cream sandos.
Getting your hands on a Sando can prove to be difficult. On Sunday January 10th, Sandoitchi will post the menu of the upcoming popup on Instagram. From 6 p.m. (set the alarm, warn them), pre-orders for the next two weeks will be accepted. You need a password to access the website. So register here beforehand to ensure access on Sunday.
Once you’ve selected your Sandos, select the date and time to pick it up. Although the company didn’t immediately reveal the location details, Eater Austin reports that the Sandos will be served from Devil May Care on West Sixth Street.
Sandoitchi has sparked an almost cultic devotion since launching in his hometown of Dallas in July 2020. Not only are the sandwiches themselves Instagram-worthy, but they also offer a culinary punch worthy of the hype. As CultureMap Houston discovered upon arriving in H-Town this fall, Sandoitchi boss Stevie Nguyen Uchi’s impressive résumé includes locations in Dallas and Houston, as well as a stint at New York’s Momofuku Ko, the superstar’s two-Michelin-starred crown jewel – Chef David Chang’s culinary empire.
In addition to Dallas and Houston, Sandoitchi has also shown up in Plano, Fort Worth and Orange Counties, where they got a reputation from the Queen of Instagram herself: Chrissy Teigen.
