US Senate confirms retired general Austin as Pentagon chief

Washington [US]January 23 (ANI): The United States Senate on Friday confirmed retired General Lloyd Austin as the new Secretary of Defense.

Austin is the first African American to head the department.

The Senate voted largely bipartisan to approve the nominee for the Department of Defense from President Joe Biden, Austin, CNN reported. The vote was 93-2.

President Biden signed a bill providing a waiver that would allow Austin to serve as Secretary of Defense in his administration.

Yesterday the House approved a waiver to allow Austin to serve as Secretary of Defense in the Biden administration.

According to CNN, Austin had to get a waiver of a law requiring a Secretary of Defense to wait seven years after active duty before accepting the job.

President Joe Biden’s election as Secretary of Defense had to win two votes: one from both houses of Congress to grant the waiver and another from the Senate to confirm him for the position.

Austin will be one of the most prominent members of Biden’s cabinet. The Secretary of Defense controls the country’s largest government agency, commands troops around the world, and the intricate internal workings of the Pentagon that make it one of the most formidable bureaucracies in the world.
