New report lists Austin as the most surveilled big city in Texas

Report: Austin is the most heavily monitored city in Texas

The ranking did not include bell cameras, although the report noted them.

According to a report published by compareitech.com, Austin is the most monitored metropolitan area in Texas with around four CCTV cameras per 1,000 residents.

Paul Bischoff, editor of compareitech.com, said the research group first tried to analyze surveillance levels in the 50 most populous cities in the United States, but they only found enough data to analyze 39. Overall, Austin ended up in the middle at number 20.

Dallas has about three cameras per 1,000 people and Houston has one camera per 1,000. San Antonio, the seventh largest US city, was left out due to a lack of data, as were El Paso and Arlington.

“This includes all cameras that the police or government services have access to. So traffic cameras, police cameras, cameras for public transport, things like that,” said Bischoff.

Bischoff says the number of cameras per 1,000 people in Austin is likely to be higher. The researchers could only access old data to determine how many cameras are on the city’s buses. “That number is over ten years old, so we expect there are likely more cameras in city buses now,” he said.

According to Bischoff, the crime index does not correlate with the number of cameras in a city. The ranking did not include bell cameras, although the report noted them. In Austin, the police can access doorbell cameras with the homeowner’s permission. According to Bischoff, the police have made 15 requests for ring tones – a number he describes as “average”.
