New Downtown Austin Food Truck Serves Transylvanian Chimney Cakes

Downtown Austin Food Truck Dracula’s son specializes in a Transylvanian pastry called Chimney cake. The trailer is parked on 503 East Cesar Chavez, in Food Truck Park across from the Austin Convention Center.

Chimney cakes, also called kürtőskalács in Hungarian, are cakes made from a sweet yeast dough that is spun on a skewer, rolled in toppings and roasted with melted butter (they get their name from their conical shape). The chimney cakes at Dracula’s Son can be filled with whipped cream, cake filling, Nutella or ice cream and topped with items such as chocolate, graham crackers and coconut.

The trailer also offers coffee and espresso, sodas, and milkshakes.

Dracula’s son belongs to Bobby Truta, a 17-year-old hotel manager from Transylvania who moved to Austin two years ago and missed the popular dessert from home. It ordered equipment from Europe, started selling chimney cakes at Hope Farmers Market, and recently upgraded to a grocery trailer to be more creative with the menu.

Dracula’s Son is open Wednesday through Sunday from 12pm to 5pm
