Local charcuterie shop spreads out with artful new cafe in West Austin

Laguna Gloria’s transformation continues with the expansion of Austin Charcuterie Boutique Spread & Co. The cheese-centric café opens on February 4th in Laguna Gloria, Contemporary Austin’s 14-acre art complex at 3809 W. 35th St.

Spread & Co. is located in a modern glass and steel kiosk at the main entrance of the shady property, the former room of the Épicerie in The Contemporary, which was closed in March 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

While Spread & Co. maintains its original location in Jefferson Square, opened in 2016 by owners Rosemary and Austin Ewald, the new location in Laguna Gloria offers a new dining option for museum visitors as well as residents of the nearby Tarrytown, Highland Park and Balconies neighborhoods .

Just steps from the campus’s sprawling sculpture park, Spread & Co. at the Laguna Gloria has a menu that focuses on portability and pasturability, and includes a variety of curated cheese boards, sausages and breads, and homemade jams. Pickles and dips the business is known for. Also available are a range of breakfast items and coffee drinks, sandwiches and toasts, salads, baked goods, shareables and of course a selection from Spread & Co’s “Cheese n Things” menu. Beer and wine will be added to the menu once the liquor license is granted Restaurants is in operation.

Due to COVID-19 security concerns, Spread & Co.’s new location in Laguna Gloria offers online and roadside pick-ups, as well as personal orders, only from the walk-in window. Museum members receive a reduced price for food and drinks. Covered outdoor seating is available, and Laguna Gloria ticket holders have access to multiple picnic tables dotted around the property.

“We had some concerns about the timing, of course, but when it came to openings during a pandemic, we couldn’t have imagined anything more perfect,” says Rosemary Ewald of Spread & Co .. “The contemporary in Laguna Gloria is such a special, historic place , which is completely in the open air and treats COVID so responsibly. Guests can feel safe if they reserve a ticket in advance and have some food and coffee to enjoy outdoors while walking the grounds – the perfect activity to get out of the house for some fresh air snap and move a little. “

While Spread & Co. is the latest addition to Laguna Gloria, it’s not the only upgrade the museum has seen recently. The property recently underwent a multi-year, multi-million dollar renovation that added new art to the museum shop, an arrivals garden, more shaded areas, and the coffee shop area.

Nicole Chism Griffin, communications director at The Contemporary Austin, says the museum spoke to the owners of Spread & Co. about the project for several months and found the partnership suits them well.

“The menu from Spread & Co. is very suitable for picnics on the 14 hectares of art and nature in Laguna Gloria or – as soon as we are able – a good lunch at a table on the covered terraces around the main entrance to the sculpture park “, she says. “Even during COVID, we were able to occasionally host socially distant outdoor films and other small events in the museum. Now imagine you are sitting in the amphitheater at dusk with a beautifully designed wicker board and a glass of wine or a really good coffee. It’s just perfect! “

Spread & Co. in Laguna Gloria is open Thursday to Saturday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
