Local barbecue institution heats up Austin suburb with new restaurant

After months of heartbreaking restaurant business, a local grill company brings good news. Stiles Switch BBQ – an Austin original since 2011 – has opened a second location in Cedar Park at 800 W. Whitestone Blvd.

“Of course it’s a crazy time to open a new place during a pandemic, but we had that in the works before the apocalypse started and we successfully opened the doors,” a restaurant spokesman said via email.

This newest jewel in the crown of owner Shane Stiles was officially opened on Friday 21st August. At the top is the long-time pit master Lance Kirkpatrick. The Stiles suburban outpost offers the same selection of artisanal grills as North Austin’s flagship, including brisket, St. Louis style pork ribs, sausage, pulled pork, and smoked chicken and turkey. Classic side dishes – corn casserole, mac ‘n’ cheese, potato salad, coleslaw, etc. – are also available.

In addition to the restaurant’s menu, diners can browse the grab-and-go suitcase, where they can purchase whole briskets, homemade sausage packs, sauces, and mixes of Barbecue Wife Margarita and Barbecue Wife Bloody Mary – the Austin-based brand of Catherine Stiles .

The new restaurant also has a liquor license that allows diners to wash down their meaty meals with frozen margaritas, cocktails on the ranch, and even a whiskey highball machine. And like in North Lamar, the restaurant offers a variety of locally made craft beers on tap.

Inside, guests will find the same Austin vibes as the original, with old school memorabilia on the walls and even some stalls from the original Threadgill’s, which closed earlier this summer due to the economic impact of COVID-19. (The famous Austin restaurant and the original Stiles Switch BBQ were neighbors at the iconic Violet Crown Shopping Center.)

“You will find … a lot of Austin nods to live music and things we love,” says the restaurant.

The Stiles Switch Cedar Park also hosts weekly specials that ensure that almost every day is a (barbecue) party. Guests can enjoy brisket enchilada on Tuesday and Thursday, smoked prime rib on Wednesday and chicken steak (with Texas Wagyu beef) on Friday.

Both locations are open for dine-in with a capacity of 50 percent and for take-away orders. While online ordering is only available for North Lamar, those interested in placing an order for the Cedar Park locale can call 512-305-3611.
