Gunmen from Northeast Austin hotel ambush remain at large

Gunmen ambushed at the hotel in northeast Austin remain at large

The area is known for its crime problem, but so far investigators have not been able to link the armed men to any other incident.

What initially looks like a walk turns into something completely different when two men emerge from the shadows and shoot another man in a parked car.

The incident was recorded by surveillance cameras. The shooting took place on October 5 in the parking lot of the Quality Inn and Suites on the 7900 block of Gessner Drive near the intersection of Highway 183 and I-35.

“It’s a shocking video to watch to see the victim just walk to their car – to get something out of their car and two guys standing on the sidewalk … and at them shoot, “said APD Detective Tyler Latham.

Latham doesn’t think the shooting was a botched carjacking or a botched robbery. “It doesn’t look like they were going to steal anything. With the way they walked, the first man was gone before the second man started shooting,” he said.

The area is known for its crime problem, but so far investigators have not been able to link the armed men to any other incident. Not knowing is unsettling for Maria Gauna, who stayed at the hotel.

“I didn’t know about the shooting and was here alone all day … I mean, it’s usually quiet,” said Gauna.

What Detective Latham realizes, aside from the muzzle flashes in the video, is that the attack was an ambush. “It seems to me that you have targeted the victim or his friend.”

The man who was shot survived. He told investigators he recently moved back to Austin. At the time, according to Latham, he was at the hotel with his friend.

“The victim and his friend he was staying with were very cooperative with us, they did a few interviews, they are very open to their lives, none of them can think of a reason why someone would want to shoot them” said Latham.

The suspects are described as:

  • Suspect # 1: Black man of average physique, between 18-25 years old, who most recently wore a black hoodie and dark shorts
  • Suspect # 2: Black man believed to be between 18 and 25 years old who was last seen in a light-colored hoodie and dark pants
