The family remembers a man who was fatally shot and killed by Austin police

Alexander Gonzales Jr.’s family and friends held a vigil on Wickersham Lane, Austin, Wednesday night. Gonzales was shot dead by an Austin police officer in the same location early Tuesday morning.

Police Chief Brian Manley told the media Tuesday that an Austin police officer had told the department that he would be in the off-duty area around 12:30 p.m. The plainclothes officer and his personal vehicle said Gonzales cut him off and “showed” him[ed] a gun “on him. The officer then opened fire. Gonzales’ girlfriend was shot.

Manley did not clarify whether Gonzales drew the gun and stopped next to the officer or drew the gun and drove on.

Gonzales drove a few blocks before pulling up. Gonzales’ wounded friend can be heard on a cell phone video on FOX 7 Austin screaming for their child. You can also hear the cop say to someone, “The woman is lying on the floor and says, ‘My baby, my baby, my baby.” “Manley said the cop called 9-1-1. The officer is presumably on that call. The officer can provide his ID number for the dispatcher. He told them he wasn’t sure if Gonzales’ girlfriend was shot, but said he thought it was the driver – and noticed that Gonzales had blood on his face. You can hear him tell the couple that EMS was on the way and yell, “Don’t let me shoot you again, man!” He gives Gonzales orders about his gun, but also tells the person on the other end of the phone or radio that he’s not sure if Gonzales still has a gun.

Austin cops on duty arrived minutes later, their guns also drawn. You can give Gonzales orders in Spanish and English. Manley said Gonzales then opened the back passenger door of his car and one of the officers on duty shot him fatally. Ten shots can be heard. Gonzales’ family believe the gunfire was “excessive”. His father, Alexander Gonzales Sr., told FOX 7 Austin: “… my son died on the ground struggling for air while his baby cried and his girls bled on the ground …”

Gonzales’ parents and sister believe he was reaching for his child in the back seat. “You know why he was reaching into the back? He’s reaching for his baby to examine his son. His girl was shot, his baby in the back is screaming and crying. What would you do if you had people lapping on you unload? ” “” asked Alexander Gonzales Sr.

Gonzales’ mother, Elizabeth Gonzales, says her son was the family’s “protector”. She said, “He cared about his family more than himself, they were everything to him … his girlfriend and baby were everything to him and if he had to risk his life he would have done it, he would – any man would do it. ” for the family.”

The Gonzales family tells FOX 7 Austin that they believe the officers are “killers.” Manley says they are on administrative duty pending investigation. Alexander Gonzales Sr. says he wants them fired and in jail. “All of these people are dying pointless to these laws who don’t know how to do their job and they will try to make it look like my son is a guilty party? Michael Ramos was a guilty party?” he said. Michael Ramos is a late black Spanish man who was fatally shot and killed by an Austin police officer earlier this year. Gonzales Sr. says he knows Ramos and calls him a “good mechanic”.

Gonzales’ sister Angel Gonzales said: “… people need to come out and get justice because it is not right, it is not right what they did to him, and it is not right what they do to other people who are minorities . ” She was celebrating her 21st birthday when she learned that her brother had been killed.

Austin police identify a man who was killed in shootings

Austin Police are investigating after a man was killed in a shooting involving an officer.

The family says Gonzales was a proud truck driver and new father. “We’re all just trying to make it through, my son, 28 years old, just a baby, is just beginning his life and they are going to cut my son’s life off.” said Gonzales Sr.

Manley says a gun was recovered from the scene. Gonzales’ girlfriend was in stable condition and his child unharmed on Tuesday. Wednesday night Gonzales’ family wasn’t sure where the child was. All they knew was that he had been taken from CPS.

“We just know that he was a good father and I’m not going to let the police ruin this for my son because he wasn’t a bad kid, he was a good kid.” said Elizabeth Gonzales.

The Austin Police and the Gonzales family are asking anyone with information to report.
