A downtown hotel claimed second place in Texas on Conde Nast Traveler’s Hot List. For the second time in a row, an Austin hotel has won the honor.
The Austin Proper Hotel & Residences, a luxury hotel and condominium tower on West Second Street, opened just a few months ago. However, with celebrity designer Kelly Wearstler’s sparkling interiors and a restaurant program from McGuire Moorman Hospitality, it was enough to hit the coveted list.
To curate the hot list, Conde Nast editors tested 400 new hotels around the world and eventually narrowed them down to 76 hotels – only 19 of which are in the US. What deserves The Proper’s place, writes Conde Nast Traveler: “The Indie des Landes -cool Capital is getting a stylish hotel that everyone wants to stay in.”
The Hot List has been around for nearly 25 years, but editors acknowledge that publishing this year’s round-up presented its own unique challenges amid a global pandemic. However, it also gave the strong magazine the opportunity to “stand up for an industry that has suddenly stalled and give readers hope and inspiration for future journeys”.
“We still believe in travel – really, insane, deeply – and hope to inspire readers to dream of this next great journey because when the time comes, travel will help us move forward again,” said Jesse Ashlock, the magazine’s US editor.
As for the rest of the US Hot List, California had the most hotels with five. New York City and Washington, DC followed with three places each. As mentioned earlier, Austin Proper was the only place in Texas on the list.
