A bar that doesn’t serve alcohol?
That’s the requirement for a new hangout, Sans Bar, that addiction counselor Chris Marshall plans to open in Austin – with an emphasis on live music, healthy food, and wellness activities like yoga.
Sans Bar, classified as Austin’s first sober bar, doesn’t have the funding to make it a reality yet, but Marshall is hoping to raise funds for it in a pop-up called Sober Showcase during South by Southwest next week.
The March 9 showcase with live music, free food, and free soft drinks follows an all-day event focused on health and fitness. Would you like to hear from Marshall firsthand? He will speak at Fitvent at 4pm about creating a “safe place to stay sober and social,” according to the event page.
At 8 p.m. that day, the Fitvent area transforms into the Sober Showcase, accessible for $ 7-10 or $ 15-25 if you want the VIP experience. The drinks include non-alcoholic riffs with classic cocktails – like the Jupiter Tonic instead of Gin Tonic.
Marshall has been trying to fund Sans Bar since 2015 when he started a GoFundMe page. His ongoing campaign hasn’t done much so far, but as news of the SXSW popup begins to spread, it appears that more donations have been made in the past few days.
“Laughing with friends, listening to music, meeting new people while you sip your favorite drink and relax. That’s so much fun going to a bar,” reads the Sans Bar About page. doing all of this without alcohol? Sans Bar is here. “
According to the site, Marshall decided to open Sans Bar because, while working in addiction counseling, he noticed that people who would get clean and sober would recover because they didn’t know how to have fun without drugs and alcohol. But Sans Bar is for everyone who wants to have a good time without alcohol.
“Our mission is to provide unparalleled and innovative non-alcoholic beverage and food service, quality live music, sober sports watching and life courses that enliven our customers and positively impact our local community through social well-being and philanthropic well-being,” the website states .
The Sober Showcase takes place on March 9th, the first official day of SXSW, from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. at 301 Chicon Street. The Sans Bar has other pop-ups year-round – mostly at 305 Stark Street – in case you miss the Sober Showcase or want more events like this one.
