Austin FC have signed free agent defender Matt Besler, the expansion club announced on Wednesday in 2021.
Besler’s contract with Sporting Kansas City expired after the 2020 season, his 12th year with the organization.
The 33-year-old competed in 10 games (nine starts) in 2020 and has recorded three goals and 18 assists in 294 games (285 starts) since 2009. He helped the club win three US Open Cups and the 2013 MLS Cup.
“We are excited to add a proven defender to the roster who fits the profile we expect from a player,” said Austin Sporting Director Claudio Reyna in a press release. “Matt’s unique blend of leadership and competitive experience is a valuable combination of strengths and we are excited to see him continue his career in Austin.”
Besler competed with the US men’s national team at the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil and has played 47 international matches.
“I am excited about this opportunity,” said Besler in a press release. “After playing at MLS for so many years, I can’t help but look forward to an ambitious project at Austin FC. I’ve seen amazing things from Austin’s fan base and I really look forward to playing in front of them.”
Besler gives Austin another option in the central defender alongside Julio Cascante and Jhohan Romana.
