Austin company offers ‘pawternity’ leave and free pet adoptions

KVUE – An Austin-based company gives its employees another perk: they cover pet adoption fees.

The zebra announced Monday that it would be the first employer in the United States to do so. Up to $ 300 per year for employees looking to add a fur baby to their family.

The Zebra is an insurance comparison website that compares more than 100 insurance companies. The headquarters are in Austin. In addition, employees can use the company’s paid leave policy to familiarize themselves with their new pet, sometimes referred to as a “pawternity” vacation.

“Some time ago I took my Labrador Zuma with me on the train to my office every day. I know that this kind of camaraderie can make a huge difference in quality of life and mental health. Right now that we’re all working remotely for the foreseeable future, I want to make sure that anyone at The Zebra who wants to can experience it, ”said Keith Melnick, CEO of The Zebra.

Maribeliz Ortiz, Quality Assurance Coordinator at The Zebra, took advantage of the opportunity to adopt Niko, a long-haired miniature dachshund. She said it was her “dream dog” since childhood.

“I’m not ready to have a child anytime soon,” said the 27-year-old. “But it feels really good to be supported by my company to raise a family like I can now.”
