APD investigating death of Southeast Austin toddler as homicide

Austin police said in a press release Monday that the death of a toddler in southeast Austin in February is being investigated as a homicide.

According to police, Austin 911 received a call at around 6:06 p.m. on Monday, February 15, 2021 from a resident of the 7000s block on Tonka Lane, reporting that a baby later identified as Isabella Rios was was gripped and had difficulty breathing.

According to police, employees from the Austin-Travis County Ambulance Service and the Austin Fire Department have arrived on site to care for the child. According to APD, Isabella Rios was taken to Dell Children’s Medical Center, where she died around 4:12 p.m. on February 18, 2021

According to the APD, the APD Child Abuse Unit began investigating the matter on February 16, 2021, based on information from hospital staff.

According to police, the Travis County Medical Examiner performed an autopsy on February 19, 2021. Child abuse detectives await the final results but consider the death suspicious based on the evidence gathered so far and are investigating the incident as a murder.

This is Austin’s 11th murder in 2021.
