Openings and closings
We finally have an opening date for the latest Jo’s coffeeThe new Jo’s is located on 41st Street and on the Red River (the former home of the Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf) and will not offer a drive-through service until it opens. The operation menu includes the typical range of coffee and espresso drinks as well as the company’s typical Iced Turbo. Additionally, Jo’s 41st offers breakfast tacos and salads, as well as a variety of sandwich options, including deli tuna, turkey club, and fried chicken sandwich.
A spicy chicken chain from New York is on the drag. Chick’nCone officially opened on January 23 at 2348 Guadalupe St. The restaurant’s eponymous chicken (which comes in a cone) is pickled in a variety of sauce options ranging from mild cinna maple to fiery South African peri peri chili sauce. In addition to the a la carte menu items, the outpost offers a “fork-free” chick’ncone meal that includes Cajun fries and a drink in addition to the basic chicken and waffle cone. The current opening hours of Chick’nCone Austin are Monday through Thursday from 11:30 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Friday and Saturday from 11:30 am to 11:00 pm; and Sunday from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m.
A longtime chef for Austin Staples Tuk tuk has moved to greener pastures: his own Thai-Chinese cuisine. Chef Lock Noieam recently opened Wok Ur world 6611 S. MoPac Blvd. offers both Chinese favorites and Thai specialties, including meaty stir-fries, noodles and curries, as well as soups and salads. In addition, his special house menu includes basil clams and Pla Lad Prik (baked fried tilapia in red curry sauce). Wok Ur World is currently open for food and dining from Tuesday to Sunday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and from 4.30 p.m. to 9 p.m.
The cowboyRenowned chef Grae Nonas’ spaghetti western-inspired Italian restaurant will head into the sunset next month. The pop-up from Nonas, former head chef of Carpenter’s hall and co-founder of the chef of Olamaie, worked in his temporary room at 2113 Manor Rd. since August 2020. Le Cowboy will be serving its last dinner on Friday 19th February (reservations are full, but a waiting list option remains), while take-out service is only available on Mondays before closing.
Other messages and notes
Ice cream lovers are happy! Ban dairy‘s … um, ban … has been lifted – at least for a final week. Chef Laura Aiden recently closed her alcohol-focused ice cream parlor but is reviving it for a special week-long pop-up in the historic Cedar Tavern, located in the South Lamar Restaurant Eberly. In the week leading up to Valentine’s Day, which begins February 9, guests can enjoy $ 16 flights of alcoholic ice cream for two, including pampering offerings like bourbon pecan praline ice cream, prickly pear mezcal sorbet, and earl gray mandarin Napoleon ice cream. Eberly is currently taking both reservations and walk-ins, but will be closed on actual Valentine’s Day, Sunday January 14th.
Four restaurants in the area are doing their part to combat food waste. A weekend-long pop-up window titled “Waste Is Gold” will list the participating restaurants, including Foreign & domestic, Otoko, Il ugly, and lighthouse, Serve dishes made from food waste ingredients. (For example, Casa de Luz’s entire breakfast menu is made from leftover vegetables from the previous evening’s lunch / dinner that would otherwise have been wasted). The event is supported by the restaurant tech startup Choco and will take place from January 28th to 30th. Meals are available from restaurant to restaurant, both for take-away and for dinner.
It is safe to assume that when happiness put together a Super Bowl snack package, they bring out the big guns. On Sunday February 7th, Suerte will be offering a limited number of take-away Suadero taco kits, one of which is the restaurant’s attitude towards queso (you heard that right, queso). Matchday kits also include brisket, 16 tortillas, lentils, two bags of homemade Masa chips, four margaritas and much more. The online order for the limited edition kit is expected to go online on Monday 1st February on the Suerte website.
