6 things to know in Austin food: Korean fried chicken takes flight

Restaurant chain based in Korea BB.Q chicken debuted at its first location in Austin on Monday, August 17, cementing the city’s status as a destination for firm, traditionally twice-fried Korean chicken. BB.Q Chicken is exclusively open at 6929 Airport Blvd to establishments such as Seoul-Ju and Spicy Boys. The menu features tasty rubs and sauces such as original golden olives, soy garlic and secret spices, which are available in combination with bones, bones and wings, as well as various side dishes such as sweet potato fries, corn salad, and ddeok bokki (spicy Korean rice cake) . Daijoubu – a pop-up cocktail establishment owned by Caer Maiko, CultureMap’s 2019 Bartender of the Year – has announced plans for an ambitious new Asian market on the east side of Austin. Looking for a way to support the city’s Asian-American community during the coronavirus era, Maiko and business partner Sharon Yeung opted for a market-style pop-up concept to serve their inspired libations. Several Asian-owned establishments work with Maiko and Yeung, including the Indian bakery 33 Tigers, the pop-up event company Gan Bei Gals and the Onigiri Corner from Asahi Import. Daijoubus Pop-up will take over the former Last Straw area in E. Sixth St. 1914 and will be open from Thursday to Saturday from August 20 to September 20. Daijubu’s changing menu with food and cocktails is only available for take-away orders and can be picked up online between 4pm and 8pm at www.daijoubupopup.com.

With new additions to its menu and dining area Plaza Colombian Coffee brings South American flavors to South Austin. The improved menu includes the most important arepas and empanadas, as well as newly introduced tiki cocktails with a variety of rum and mezcal. Plaza Colombian is also partnering with Easy Tiger Bake Shop and Hudson Meat Market to serve Colombian street dogs – a staple in Bogota’s restaurant scene – at its new on-site hot dog stand. The 2,000 square meter outdoor terrace of the Plaza Colombia was also expanded with new additions such as art installations, parasols and an outdoor stage on which the Latin American musicians of Austin are presented. The interior of the Plaza Colombian is currently closed. All guests must wear masks when ordering, walking outside and using the restrooms. Plaza Colombian is open Monday to Wednesday from 7:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., Thursday to Saturday from 7:30 a.m. to 12:00 a.m., and Sundays from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Austin’s premier Israeli street food restaurant is returning to downtown Food Hall Fareground with what may be the biggest salad menu in town. TLVThe revamped à la carte menu includes 18 different traditional Israeli Salatim (salad and spread) options, including hummus, baba ghanoush, cumin beets, fire-fried eggplants, and more for a filling meal. TLV is open Tuesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. for roadside collection and third party delivery.

August 15th in South Austin St. Elmo Brewing Co. announced that its standout flagship, Carl Koslch, is finally arriving on the shelves. Carl’s crushable body and moderate ABV, a staple of local taprooms and bars, are currently only available in crowlers and tallboys exclusively in the taproom. With the wide release of beer, Carl adopts a new format: 12 oz. Canned six-packs with a snazzy retro label design courtesy of Austin artist / designer Keith Young. Eager craft beer nerds can grab the new version of Easy Tiger on Linc, WhichCraft Taproom and Bottleshop and of course from St. Elmo’s Taproom. A longtime Austinite is working to ensure that a legendary Southside pizza place does not close permanently. The second of two remaining Conan’s pizza The locations – a family-owned chain often voted the Best Slice in town – were slated to close in early October until Jeremy Shirk stepped in. “I have a contract with Scott [Leist], the owner of Conan’s Pizza South, to buy the restaurant, bear the Conan’s name, and keep it going with no job losses or business interruptions, ”Shirk’s statement read on a recently launched GoFundMe page.
