3 Austin charities part of famed philanthropist’s $4 billion endowment

Author and philanthropist MacKenzie Scott (known to many as the former wife of Amazon CEO and billionaire Jeff Bezos) has donated more than $ 4 billion to charities across the country, including Austin and central Texas.

In a post on Medium, Scott notes that she and her advisors have paid out approximately $ 4,158,500,000 to 384 organizations in all 50 states, Puerto Rico and Washington, DC, in the past four months. This is in an effort to “accelerate my 2020 donations by providing immediate support to people suffering the economic impact of the crisis,” writes Scott.

Scott’s generosity includes the following Austin area organizations and groups:

  • Meals on Wheels Central Texas

  • YWCA Greater Austin

  • Heart of Texas Goodwill Industries (Killeen)

Meals on Wheels received $ 8 million while Greater Austin YWCA received $ 1 million.

“We are humble for Ms. Scott’s generosity and deeply grateful for the trust she has shown in our agency and the work we are doing,” said Adam Hauser, President and CEO of Meals on Wheels in central Texas an explanation. “And we are grateful to our central Texas donor and volunteer community for their loyal support and for helping us build and sustain an organization that deserves this extraordinary gift.”

Scott also donated a record-breaking $ 50 million to Prairie View A&M University, a historically black college in Houston, the institution announced on December 15. The gift is the largest one-time foundation in the school’s 144-year history.

As part of the donation, funds can be used at the President’s discretion to support the university’s needs, according to a press release. Administrators have decided to allocate $ 10 million to set up the Panther Success Grant program to help juniors and seniors with unpaid credits created by the financial challenges of COVID-19, the school said.

“This is a historic gift for Prairie View that came at a time when the university had already decided to invest heavily in key areas to strengthen its academic programs and improve student success,” said Ruth J. Simmons, President of Prairie View. in a statement. “So the timing of this gift couldn’t be better.”

Simmons said in a statement that she was in contact with Scott “on a matter not involving Prairie View,” and was therefore “stunned and speechless for a while” when Scott’s assistant called to reveal the donation.
