Austin’s history stretches back thousands of years to a time when native tribes occupied the land. This is evident in the many artifacts found throughout the city.

The First Settlers

The area around Austin was first settled by Anglo-Americans in the mid-19th century. This group of people came here to work on the fertile soil and farm the land. Sadly, some of them wasted the land and the land became unproductive.

Another wave of settlement occurred when the Germans arrived in the 1820s and later the Czechs and other Europeans. This is when Austin began to develop as a large city.

During this time, Austin developed an important business community that would eventually make it the largest city in Texas. The city had several notable businesses at this point, including a telegraph office, an iron works, a sawmill and a tannery.

The Civil War and the Reconstruction eras greatly affected the development of the city, as well as racial relations. The University of Texas enrolled black undergraduates in 1956, and the city was a focal point for civil rights movements.

In the late 19th century, a group of citizens led by Austin native Andrew P. Wooldridge formed a reform movement to improve the lives of residents. They changed the city's system of government from commission to council-manager and began a series of improvements that still persist in the modern city.

A major improvement in the city's quality of life was the construction of two of the world's great reservoirs, Lake Austin and Barton Springs. These lakes, which have shaped the physical landscape of the city, are fed by springs and tributaries that flow through Austin from the mountains above.

These natural resources, which were abundant in the past, were now under threat by the growth of the city. Water supply was an issue, and the city built a dam to produce electricity and provide a source of drinking water.

The construction of the dam was a major undertaking, as it required an extensive network of tunnels and a dam wall to prevent flooding. It took over four decades before the dam was completed and the city was fully equipped for a growing population.

Today, the city is a center of political, cultural and economic activity. It is home to the University of Texas and many other colleges and universities.

For those who enjoy walking, there are several trails within close proximity to downtown Austin that allow you to explore the surrounding areas without the need to drive. The trails are easy to navigate and include the Zilker Park Trail, the Lady Bird Lake Trail and more.

You can even hike to the top of the Hill Country Overlook for a breathtaking view of Austin. There are also a few waterfalls near the city, including Austin Falls and Zilker Falls, which can be accessed by hiking or riding a bike.
